DISCUSSION SESSIONS

TE4 - Will Power Limit Microprocessor Performance? -- (Salon 9)

Moderator/Organizer: William Bowhill, Digital Equipment , Hudson, MA
Co-Organizer: David Greenhill, Sun Microsystems, Mountain View, CA

With each new generation of high-performance microprocessor, designers have implemented increasingly complex micro-architectures at higher clock frequencies using more advanced circuit techniques. As a result, power consumption has steadily increased despite technology and voltage scaling and has required advances in thermal management, power-supply distribution, signal integrity, and reliability. The panel will discuss the practical limits of power consumption and propose ways in which microprocessor performance can continue exponential growth.

Panel:

Randy Allmon, Digital Equipment Corp., Hudson, MA
David Bearden, Motorola Inc., Austin, TX
Kerry Bernstein, IBM Microelectronics Division, Essex Junction, VT
Mark Bohr, Intel Corp., Hillsboro, OR
Shashank Goel, Simplex Solutions Inc., Sunnyvale, CA
Ray Heald, Sun Microsystems Inc., Mountain View, CA
Masakazu Yamashina, NEC Corp., Kanagawa, Japan
