Much attention is being given to the Net Computer (NC), a low-cost computer tightly
coupled to the Internet or Intranet even to the extent of having no local disk. At
least three possible directions exist for the NC: (1) control by the Windows/Intel
technology that dominates PCs, (2) new technology represented by small, focused OSs
that are portable to many microprocessors, and (3) Java, a possibly-revolutionary
language with its own OS and microprocessors. These directions and their effect on
microprocessors will be debated by the panel.
