6.1 An Analog Parallel Array Processor for Real-Time Sensor Signal Processing (1:30)
P. Kinget, M. Steyaert
Katholieke Universiteit of Leuven, Leuven, Belgium
An analog parallel processor chip with a programmable 20x20 array of cellular neural network units built in 0.7um CMOS technology achieves 25 frame/s rate and 3200 instructions/frame. The design accommodates the device mismatch to achieve this performance. A compact multiplier structure results in a cell density of 16.7 cells/mm2.

The die includes a 176x144 pixel (QCIF) imager, automatic adjustment of integration time, and 2-D analog array processor for motion estimation based on a block-matching algorithm. A full search algorithm uses an 8x8-pixel reference block and a search window of 16x16 pixels. The 200mm2 device uses a 0.7um double-metal CMOS technology to achieve <100mW power consumption.

CSEM SA, Neuchatel, Switzerland
A continuous-time analog circuit in 2um CMOS integrated with a 2-D pattern of 1365 phorosensitive sites achieves position tracking of the sun over an azimuth range of ±120° and an elevation of 5° to zenith with a direction error of 15° and an intensity accuracy of 10%.
The 5.5x5.5mm2 die operates at <100uA and has a response time of 1ms.

A CMOS circuit integrating an array of 93 photodiodes, displacement estimation, and A/D converters is designed as the encoder for a trackball system. It can resolve 2-D ball motion up to 250mm/s with a resolution of 800dpi. The circuit operates at 1000 frames/s for an illumination of 100 to 500mW/m2. The 4.4x4.3mm2 die uses a low-power, low-voltage 2um technology and four pads.

Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, CA
A 128x128 photodiode active pixel sensor for oil contamination detection has an on-chip array sequencer and 1b threshold circuit for 8kframe/s rate using an 8b wide parallel digital output. An on-chip controller allows a serial output through either a digital port or an analog port. The 82,653- transistor circuit occupies 4.3x4.5mm2 in 1um CMOS.
