TE3 Photons to Bits: Is electronic imaging at a watershed?

(Sea Cliff)

Moderator: H-S. Philip Wong, IBM T.J. Watson Res. Center, Yorktown Heights, NY

Organizer: Woodward Yang, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA

Electronic imaging systems typically utilize a specialized CCD image sensor with separate support circuitry. Recently, image sensors using CMOS and CMOS/CCD processes have been demonstrated. Can CMOS image sensors match their CCD counterparts in performance and cost? Will CMOS compatible technology bring about highly integrated imaging systems and spawn new applications that will drive electronic imaging beyond the camcorder revolution? What roles will circuit and system designers play in this emerging market?
